Having a piece of art commissioned to
immortalize a person who means a great deal to you or
your organization is the ultimate gift.
Ron has completed commissioned work in both pencil drawing and wood
sculpture formats.

Each piece is customized to meet the desired format, size, and
pose required.
For wooden sculptures there is a choice of a wall hung format or a table top
format. Once the desired format, material, size, and pose have been determined, the process of creating the piece
begins. This involves a number of steps:
The customer submits photographs of the
subject in the desired pose, ideally from a number of
views. If this isn't possible, Ron will create
a drawing using any images provided.

Ron creates a
full-size pencil sketch of the front and side
views, which are shown to the client for approval. Once approved, 2" vertical lines are
added to the side view drawing to use as a
guide in determining how many layers of wood are required.
2" lumber
is ripped into random widths eliminating any sections that might cup or
warp. Flipping every other board to confuse the grain, the boards are then
glued and clamped
together to create one layer. The layer is bandsawed to the shape of the
front profile, then the layers are glued and clamped together to form the
wooden blank.

The sculpture is roughed out using a power grinder and
then a variety of chisels are used to sculpt details. The wood is
then sanded using progressively finer grit papers
and fine details such as fabric texture, wrinkles, and skin pores are
added using knives or other hand tools.

The sculpture is
then finished with a
number of protective clear coats. Colour may be added to the final coals (either
to the complete piece, or only to specific areas) to add definition. The sculpture is then
carefully wrapped and
crated, in preparation for shipping to the customer.
